News We Follow: New study finds whales might be our best defense against climate change
It turns out whales are doing their part to help the planet. Their bodies absorb large amounts of carbon, and their existence promotes the growth of phytoplankton, which also absorbs carbon (and emits oxygen). That’s why it makes economic and ecological sense to protect and encourage growth in the whale population.
“Since the role of whales is irreplaceable in mitigating and building resilience to climate change, their survival should be integrated into the objectives of the 190 countries that in 2015 signed the Paris Agreement for combating climate risk,” the report says.
