News We Follow: Building blocks for ‘green’ construction
Scientists have discovered something that may lead to more sustainable building materials in the future. It’s a rubber polymer, which has many different applications and can be recycled and reused multiple times. This is great news, as it may someday be able to replace non-recyclable building products, and also concrete, which creates a lot of pollution during production.
From the article: “The new manufacturing and recycling technique, labelled ‘reactive compression molding,’ applies to rubber material that can be compressed and stretched, but one that doesn’t melt. The unique chemical structure of the sulfur backbone in the novel rubber allows for multiple pieces of the rubber to bond together.”
