News We Follow: Killing coronavirus with handheld ultraviolet light device may be feasible
Research is showing that it would be possible to create and use portable UV light devices to kill coronavirus. The current options for killing viruses via UV light are tools that are large, expensive, energy inefficient, and short-lived. So scientists are looking into making a smaller, more sustainable version of these tools, and have taken the first step in making them a reality. Such devices could be used to sanitize the air in crowded indoor spaces.
“While our first motivation in developing UV transparent conductors was to build an economic solution for water disinfection, we now realize that this breakthrough discovery potentially offers a solution to deactivate COVID-19 in aerosols that might be distributed in HVAC systems of buildings.”
